I CARE CLINICS & CNETERS

Development and Implementation of I-CARE Student-Run Clinics & Service Cneters

Overview:
We focused on developing and implementing Interprofessional Student-Led Clinics (IPSLCs), which were established within universities as community-based, supervised learning and service centres. These clinics deliver real care to underserved populations while training students in interprofessional collaboration and ethical primary care.

Core Activities and Outcomes:

1. Clinic Establishment:
  - 6 clinics were implemented: 3 in Egypt (BUC, Al-Azhar, Assiut) and 3 in Lebanon (BAU, Notre Dame, MUBS).
  - Clinics were embedded in the partner universities’ health sciences faculties and operated by senior students under professional supervision.
  - Originally planned 9 clinics, but 3 Egyptian universities did not sign partnership agreements and thus were ineligible for funding and implementation.

2. Clinic Functionality:
  - Delivered real consultations and primary care services, focusing on disadvantaged and refugee populations.
  - All services provided were free of charge.
  - Clinics conducted community screening campaigns and collected real patient data for applied learning.

3. Interprofessional Practice:
  - Involved students and trainers from medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, public health, IT, AI, and allied health fields.
  - Supported interprofessional problem-solving and case management.

4. Enterprise and Non-Academic Partner Involvement:
  - Hospitals and clinics (non-academic associate partners) contributed to curriculum design, clinic supervision, and mentoring.
  - LEAD and IAST supported capacity-building and virtual consultation development.

5. Distinction Between CeHI and IPSLC:
  - CeHI Hubs are not student clinics but supportive administrative and training centres primarily active in Lebanon.
  - They facilitated WP3–WP5 activities by offering physical space and tools.
  - IPSLCs are student-led clinical service units, central to WP3.

Conclusion:
WP2  : The centers and WP3  ( the clinics) are distinct yet interconnected pillars of the I-CARE project:
- WP2 focused on building physical and digital infrastructures (APCIs/UHSPICs) to promote collaboration, training, and innovation.
- WP3 operationalized interprofessional education by launching real student-run clinics that deliver healthcare while training future providers.

Both work packages exemplify the knowledge triangle model and demonstrate strong, sustained collaboration between universities, enterprises, and healthcare institutions.
